Collaborative article resource assignment
Objective: Engage in-depth with scholarly articles relevant to your master's thesis theme, collaboratively create an annotated bibliography using Zotero, and synthesize your findings in a report hosted on the course wiki.
Instructions
- Form groups: Divide into groups based on the thematic area of their master's thesis (e.g., speech synthesis, speech recognition, prosodic issues, etc.). Each group will explore articles relevant to their specific area within speech technology. Groups larger than 6 should split. This means there may be 2 synthesis/recognition groups, for example. Otherwise the work of synthesis in the writing step is too complicated
- Select articles: Each member of the group will select a 3 peer-reviewed articles that align with their thesis theme. At least one of those articles should be the article cited in the proposal hypothesis.
- Make a "master" Zotero file for the class: Each group will have access to this master file to save and organize their annotated articles into designated folders based on their theme. Grant access to the instructor.
- Make a Zotero "sub-collection" for your group which is located in the master file: Make sure all group members have access.
- Annotate your articles: Use Zotero's annotation feature to add your critical evaluation and analysis to the article. You can add notes, highlights, and comments directly within the article in Zotero. Include critical evaluations of the methodologies, findings, and the articles' relevance to the group's thematic focus and that of your thesis. This is the real intellectual work of this assignment.
- Annotate your articles: Use Zotero's annotation feature to add your critical evaluation and analysis to the article. You can add notes, highlights, and comments directly within the article in Zotero.
- Critically assess the research methodology used in the article: Consider aspects like the study design, data collection methods, and analysis techniques. Discuss their strengths and limitations.
- Evaluate the clarity and logic of the argumentation within the article: Consider whether the conclusions are well-supported by the data presented.
- Reflect on any potential biases or assumptions in the study that may affect the findings.
- Assign multiple tags to each article: Ensure that each article has multiple tags, and no tag should point to only one article. Ideally some tags should point to other articles in different sub-collections.
- Wiki synthesis: Each group will synthesize their findings and analyses into a report. This report will be hosted on here. The report should involve min 1 article contribution from each student, include an introduction to the theme, the RQ and hypothesis of each selected article, and a concluding section that synthesizes the overall findings and their implications for the field.
- Introduction: Briefly introduce your thematic focus and its significance in the field of speech technology.
- Article summaries and analyses: Each article receives a subsection including a summary (reference to RQ and hypothesis), critical analysis, and discuss its relevance to your theme.
- Synthesis: Conclude with a section that synthesizes the key findings across the articles, highlighting any emerging trends, debates, or future research directions.
- Contributors: A list of contributors.
Submission
- Each member of each group will submit 1) the name of their sub-collection of the Zotero master file and 2) the link to their group wiki page.
Evaluation criteria
Students will be assessed both on their individual contributions and the group's collective output.
- Depth and insight of article analysis and annotations (40%)
- Relevance and coherence of the synthesized findings in the report (40%)
- Organization and clarity of the report, adherence to the template, and quality of writing (20%)
